Wedgwood Museum Saved!

It was announced just before Christmas that a judge at the High Court in Birmingham gave a verdict saying that the collection in the Wedgwood Museum, valued at £18 million, could be sold to help cover a £134 million pension deficit stemming back to the 2009 collapse of the Waterford Wedgwood pottery firm. This led to an outcry from the family, the local member of parliament, curators and ordinary Potteries folk, horrified by the idea that their region, which has already lost its pottery, coal and steel industries, could lose its proud heritage too. Experts believe any sale would undoubtedly see the collection broken up with the best items sold abroad.

Happily on Christmas Eve, the Daily Telegraph was able to report that billionaire John Caudwell, who was born into a working class family in Stoke on Trent in the 1950s and who made his fortune from selling his home-grown mobile phone company, had stepped forward offering to keep the collection intact, in place and open to the public.

Obviously there are many formalities to be gone through, but it looks as though the Wedgwood Museum has been saved.

We have returned to Ireland, from the Baltimore Summer Antique Show despite many flight and train cancellations.

Our daughters, Maeve & Lizzie helped Martine and I for the first time at a show. We all had a ball.

Earthquakes and hurricanes didn’t put off the youngest Majolica dealers on the block and although Baltimore was in lock down, the collectors who got to the show made the show successful.

ARTstor - New collection agreement: Majolica International Society

ARTstor is collaborating with the Majolica International Society to share 1,000 images of Majolica pottery from the collections of its members into the ARTstor Digital Library.

Majolica is a variety of brightly painted, tin-glazed pottery made of soft earthenware. It was first introduced to Italy in the 14th century by merchants from Majorca, and the tradition was revived by British porcelain factory Minton & Co. and French ceramic chemist Leon Arnoux, who presented Majolica at the Crystal Palace Exhibition in London in 1851, where it was greatly admired by Queen Victoria and the general public.

Strawser was happy with the sale overall. "Ninety-eight percent of the lots offered sold, which was great," he pointed out. Some lots exceeded Strawser's expectations. "The clamshell tureen was a nice surprise," Strawser said. Some fell short. "I had expected the Massier jardinière would have done better. Still, many of the lots sold well above our estimates, so we were very pleased," he added.

Strawser's next majolica event will be held in conjunction with the Majolica International Society's annual convention in Philadelphia. The convention begins October 27, 2011. Strawser's sale will be held at the Alderfer auction facility on October 28 and 29. "The best of the best collectors will be attending the convention and will be at the auction," Strawser said. "We expect to see great pieces going up for bids, as consignors are eager to get their items in front of this kind of audience."

Christine VIENNET: from July 21 to September 04

The aquatic world is her world, a world of tentacles that twisted, globular eyes fixing on us.

The hands of this talented ceramicist creates oceans of sea creatures, all output of its imaginative creator.  Christine Viennet was born in Norway in 1947. After a passage to the Ecole des Beaux Arts of Oslo, she worked in two large ceramic Norwegians, Rolf Hansen and Bente von Krogh. Passionate about the work of the French Renaissance ceramics, Bernard Palissy, she creates with exuberance, vases, dishes, basins, sculptures of amphibians, reptiles, faunas and floras.

Today, it is committed in the novel creation of sculptures modelled in clay, stoneware and porcelain. There are abundant species in the colours light and varied under different enamels and glazes, a marine sanctuary having already conquered from major museums and international collectors.

This beautiful collection will be accompanied by the works of her husband Jean Viennet's pastels, drawings and crayons. In to this universe figurative and surprising menu: scallops, prawns, lobsters, dream bubble and Angel of Bouzigues.

May 1, 2011, was the 160th Anniversary of the “World’s Fair”; or specifically The Great Exhibition of 1851, in Hyde Park, London.

Victorian Majolica was introduced to the world at the Great Exhibition 1851 by Herbert Minton, of Stoke-on-Trent, England.

A world's fair is a gathering of people from many parts of ...the world, at which they demonstrate their products and their arts, and promote their homelands. The modern string of world's fairs began in the middle of the nineteenth century, when the industrial revolution was unfolding.

The poet Tennyson referred to the Great Exhibition of 1851 as "the world's great fair," and the exhibition was popularly and widely referred to as "the world's fair." Since then every such event has been similarly described.

Ceramicists Christine Viennet new book - Bernard Palissy and his followers from the XVIth century to this day

The most famous of all ceramicists? Most certainly. But there is more to it. He remains a great name in French history for having been a model of perseverance and a passionate searcher and artist who burnt his furniture in order to reach the necessary temperature to fire his ceramics : a scene immortalized for generations in French school books and narrated by Palissy himself in his “Discours admirables”.

It is first of all, this strong and creative personality that captured Christine Viennet’s interest and the reason of her studies of Palissy. His tribute to nature, his enthusiasm and curiosity, led to the invention of his naturalistic ceramic style and has marked ceramic history.

In her book, Christine Viennet shows a thorough knowledge of the works of this multitalented man and of his followers from the XVIth century to the present days, with 300 pictures of a stunning collection of plates, vases, ewers… and notably fine pieces from the XVIth to the XXIst century.

Skinner Boston to sell the Kadison Collection of Wedgwood October 1st, 2010

Carita and Stuart Kadison began collecting Wedgwood in the late 1950’s but it was not until the mid 1960’s that their collecting really developed. Their early area of focus was Wedgwood and Bentley and the other fine wares of the 18th century. They traveled extensively, searching for new pieces, and also relied on dealers such as Seal Simon, Fred Tongue, Leo Kaplan and David Newbon. As time went by they also included Wedgwood majolica as a focal point, and they amassed one of the finest collections of Wedgwood majolica in the country. Much of the collection is illustrated in Robin Reilly’s two volume Wedgwood dictionary.

This important sale includes two hundred and thirty two lots and features numerous examples of Wedgwood and Bentley, 18th century jasper including a pair of tea urns and covers, and a wide variety of black basalt with plaques, wine and water ewers, stirrup cups, busts, tea wares and other ornamental wares. Variegated wares, cane ware and queen’s ware are also well in evident. The majolica encompasses over seventy lots and includes many figures and figural groups featuring a large Isaac and Rebekah group, a hefty model of a bull, and many ornamental wares and tea wares. Also worth mentioning are a fine pair of moonlight luster crater urns, fairyland luster, Emile Lessore decorated wares, and a blue jasper mounted ormolu, wood and cut glass figural mantel clock.

Ms. Corbin is currently the Associate Curator in the European Arts Department at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The title of her talk will be, “A Most Exquisite Display: European Ceramics at the Philadelphia Centennial International Exhibition”. The Centennial Exhibition, which commemorated the 100th Anniversary of American independence, was held on Fairmount Park in Philadelphia between May 10 and November 10, 1876.

The figure is documented to be part of the 1862 London exposition but Christies has a black and white of the Minton stand at the 1862 show as documentation.

Keep the Minton Archive in North Staffordshire

MP meets Government minister on future of Minton Archive.

TALKS to keep the Minton Archive in North Staffordshire are continuing.

Stoke-on-Trent Central MP Mark Fisher said the Government was still in contact with the collection's new owner over the future of the archive.

The documents cover two centuries of design and manufacture by pottery company Minton, which merged with Royal Doulton in 1968 and was acquired by Waterford Wedgwood in 2005.

It is now owned by U.S.-based equity firm, KPS Capital Partners, which bought much of Waterford Wedgwood when it went bust earlier this year. The Minton archive includes thousands of water colors and drawings by artists associated with Minton – one of Royal Doulton's most famous brands.

Mr Fisher, has spoken with the government's culture minister, Margaret Hodge, in recent weeks about the archive. And he told The Sentinel: "The Government is discussing the future of the archive with its new owners and our position in the city remains that same. "The archive must be kept in one piece and be displayed in a public place in North Staffordshire such as the Potteries Museum." "I have spoken to Margaret Hodge. She is on the case and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport are still in discussions with the owners, as they have been for several months."

The archive was set to go under the hammer at London auctioneer Bonhams in London in March following the collapse of owner Waterford Wedgwood.

But the planned sale was stopped by North Staffordshire MPs and peers, who argued it had great importance locally and culturally.

Mr Fisher added: "It is a wonderful archive and we need to see it remain in the city."

"There will be both education and fun for children and grown-ups. The Timothy Sainsbury Gallery explores the making of pots. It has specially commissioned film footage and photography of potters at work. There is a part reconstruction of the studio of that great potter Lucie Rie. There is, as there should be, a workshop with wheels and a kiln where visitors can throw, decorate and fire their own pots. Another thing I learned in my research is how essential touch is to understanding, or "seeing" a pot. You need to know the feel of the clay on the wheel turning and rising. You need to know also the feel of a bowl or a jar in the hands – I was allowed to hold an Italian majolica dish, and the eggshell lightness of it changed the idea of it in my mind."

The Sept/Oct 2009 issue of Southern Accents has an article titled Capturing Cashiers, by Grace Collins Barr. It guides us through a spectacular North Carolina mountain retreat of Dorothy and Walter Fletcher. Several of the rooms feature majolica as a predominate decorative art. The article starts on page 102 and I couldn't find the same photos at the Southern Accents web. COOKING LIFE/Salmon Gets Fraîche - A short, delicious recipe with a long, nostalgic history.

My Father was a doctor by day , but in his off hours he was what some might call a little bit obsessed with fly fishing. When I was growing up, our house had two freezers: a modest one in the kitchen, stocked with ice cream and a few packs of frozen peas, and an imposing, jumbo-size model that stood in the garage. Humming like a swarm of bees. It held a few forgotten TV dinners, but for the most part, it was dedicated to one item only: salmon, entire sides of it, brought back from my father's annual fishing trip. Every summer, he and a couple of friends would pack up their rods and their waders, top off their flasks, and fly to Alaska in search of wild salmon. When he returned a week or so later, a box of loot came with him: the fish he had caught-cleaned and gutted and ready for the freezer -enough to feed our family of three until the following summer.

The centerpiece of my father's weekend wardrobe was a khaki fly-fisherman's vest, the kind with a million tiny pocket, and his bookshelves were thick with short stories about rivers and streams.

Molly Wizenberg is the daughter of Society member Toni Wizenberg. Many of the Society members can identify with the nostalgic image that Molly creates of her father, Moe. He is now deceased. Moe was a long-time executive of the Majolica International Society.

Convention 2009 Begins - 4-30-2009

Well the 2009 Majolica International Society convention has begun.

New York weather has been very agreeable. It allowed me a beautiful run in Central Park where I did get a chance to see the Pavilion Tunnel and view the 19th Century Minton tile ceilings. Outstanding!

The members arriving early were treated to a bus ride to Long Island collector homes. It was truly a once in a lifetime opportunity. Friday has the same trip planned for those that arrived today.

MajoliCake and Coffee is planned for this evening and will have great member presentations about the whys and hows of their collecting habits.

Potteries Museums Mount Rescue Plan
LONDON. The Minton ceramics archive faces dispersal, following the financial collapse of the Waterford Wedgwood Group in January. Minton, founded in 1793, had been acquired by Royal Doulton in 1968, which in turn was bought by Waterford Wedgwood in 2005. Bonhams, which has been advising over the Minton archive sale, has valued it at around £6m. With material dating back to the late 18th century, the Minton archive ranges from painted designs for plates to financial records. Among the major 19th century designers represented are Augustus Pugin and Christopher Dresser. If the archive goes to auction, it would be divided into lots and dispersed. In the present situation, the Waterford Wedgwood administrators, Deloitte, are obliged to maximise the proceeds, and this might well involve breaking up the collection.

A rescue plan is now being mounted jointly by the Wedgwood Museum in Barlaston and the Potteries Museum in Stoke-on- Trent. The archive would be jointly owned, but would normally be stored at the Wedgwood Museum, which has modern facilities.

Discussions are currently under way on the price, since the museums feel that £6m is excessive; they have commissioned independent valuations suggesting a figure around half that sum. Approaches are being made to the National Heritage Memorial Fund and the Art Fund.

The government appears supportive. Deputy chief whip Lord Davies said in the House of Lords on 11 February: we are "fully seized of the importance of the archive and we want to see it intact and, preferably, in the Potteries [area of Midlands]".

New York City: By the time Antiques and Art at the Armory. At the clients' opening, shopping began almost as soon as the doors opened. Nicolaus Boston Antiques of Ireland was among the first to break out the bubble wrap and tape for a prized offering by Christopher Dresser. The rare Aesthetic Movement piece of pottery, a matte finish brown bird descending into a turquoise vase, was bought by a local collector. With that on the wing, other collectors still had plenty more to enjoy, including Boston's centerpiece, "The Mermaid," an 1878 majolica sculpture by Albert Carrier Belleuse featuring a shell and mermaids.

Acquisition of Buten Wedgwood Collection Makes Birmingham Museum's Holdings Largest in U.S.

BIRMINGHAM, AL.- The Birmingham Museum of Art announced today the acquisition of the Buten Wedgwood Collection of more than 8,000 objects made by the Wedgwood factory in England dating from 1759. Combined with the Museum’s existing Dwight and Lucille Beeson Wedgwood Collection of more than 1,400 objects, the recent acquisition establishes the only collection of its kind in the U.S., and the largest and most comprehensive collection of Wedgwood ceramics outside of England. With this acquisition Birmingham will present two and a half centuries of Wedgwood production. The year 2009 marks the 250th anniversary of the founding of the company. Read more:
